Exam dates: For lectures, at least three exam dates must be offered per semester: at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the semester. These dates must be announced before the start of the semester. The assessment modalities of a course must also be determined at the beginning of the semester and may not be changed afterwards.
Exam attempts: You have a certain number of attempts per subject. During the STEOP phase, it’s four attempts, then five. The fourth and fifth attempts in lecture exams must be held in front of a board of examiners. If you fail a final possible attempt in a compulsory subject, you will be blocked from this degree program (and all those in which this course is also compulsory).
Exam retake: You can repeat a failed exam up to four times. You may repeat a passed exam once within six months or before the end of the study phase. The grade of the last attempt counts, even if it is worse. Since the winter semester of 2022/23, there has been an additional sixth attempt for the last exam of the degree program.
Exam cancellation: You have the right to cancel your registration up to two working days before the exam in writing or electronically via TISS. If cancellation is no longer possible in TISS, you can still cancel by email.
Certificate award: If you do not show up for an exam, you will not receive a certificate. If you leave the room during the exam, you will be graded negatively.
Assessment and certificate: The certificate must be issued no later than four weeks after the examination. If you need it earlier, you can ask the course instructor by email.
Exam review: Examiners are required to allow you to inspect your graded exams (up to 6 months after the assessment). You may also make copies of the corrected documents, with the exception of multiple-choice questions and their answers. This inspection does not have to take place on a fixed date. If a date is set, but you do not have time, you must be offered further opportunities to inspect.
Waiting list regulation: If you are on the waiting list for an exam date, you must still appear at the date. If there are free places available at the exam, you can take it immediately. Otherwise, an alternative date must be offered to you as soon as possible, but preferably within 2 weeks.
Recognition of exams: You can use credits already earned elsewhere (e.g. certificates from other universities) for the completion of your current studies. Further information can be found on the page Recognition of exams | TU Wien
Leave of absence: Under certain circumstances, it is possible to interrupt your studies at TU Wien for a short time without losing your admission to study at TU Wien. No study achievements can be made during the leave of absence. Further information can be found on the TU Wien website.
