The basis of your studies is the study plan, also called curriculum. Each course (LVA) has a certain number of ECTS credits, which reflect the workload (1 ECTS = approx. 25 hours). A bachelor’s degree requires at least 180 ECTS and lasts six semesters (but usually more at TU Wien).
In the study plan you will also find the semester schedule, which is only a recommendation, except for the STEOP restriction.
STEOP
STEOP – The STudies Entrance and Orientation Phase is there to help you find out whether the bachelor’s degree you have chosen is suitable for you. It is a pool of several LVAs that are intended to provide the basis for higher subjects.
The STEOP must be completed in order to complete subjects from the third semester onwards. Although it is intended to complete the STEOP in the first semester, the STEOP subjects are offered in both the winter and summer semesters.
The STEOP for the Bachelor’s program in Business Informatics comprises 15.5 ECTS and consists of the following subjects:
- Mandatory part (11.5 ECTS):
- Free choice from the following pool (min. 4 ECTS):
- VU Algebra and Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science and Business Informatics (9.0 ECTS)
- VU Analysis for Computer Science and Business Informatics (6.0 ECTS)
- VU Database Systems (6.0 ECTS)
- VU Ways of Thinking in Business Informatics (4.0 ECTS)
- VU Cost and Performance Accounting (3.0 ECTS)
- VU Modeling (5.5 ECTS)
- VU Accounting (2.0 ECTS)
Note
Within the STEOP phase, you only have four exam attempts per subject. Once you have completed the STEOP, the 5th attempt is available to you.
To stay within the minimum period of study, you should complete 30 ECTS per semester. The semester recommendation in TISS will help you with this.
In order to be able to complete non-STEOP subjects from the first and second semesters, no completed STEOP is necessary! You only need this for subjects from the third semester onwards.
In order not to be exmatriculated, you must earn at least 16 ECTS in the first four semesters.
LVA Types
There are different types of courses, the most important are:
- VO (Lecture): A professor gives a lecture, there is no compulsory attendance. The grade is 100% based on a final exam.
- UE (Exercise): Take place in small groups, often with compulsory attendance. The grade is based on blackboard performance and tests throughout the semester (prüfungsimmanent).
- VU: Lecture with exercise part are a popular form of LVA at the TU because they allow for a very flexible course design.
The exact procedure of the course will be described in the preliminary discussion (usually the 1st lecture date).
Bachelor’s in Business Informatics
The content of a degree program is taught through examination subjects and modules.
Each examination subject consists of one or more modules, and each module consists of one or more courses.
To complete a module, you must successfully complete the courses it contains (unless the module has other conditions, such as a maximum of X ECTS).
Your 180 ECTS credits are made up of the following areas:
1. Compulsory Modules (137 ECTS)
There are 20 compulsory modules that you must pass (i.e., successfully complete all of the courses they contain).
Note
The recommended distribution of courses per semester can be found in TISS in the semester view tab

2. Elective Specialization (min. 12 ECTS)
Here you have the opportunity to set your own initial focus.
You must choose courses totaling at least 12 ECTS credits from the specialization modules:
- Module SPF/INT – Specialization Information Technology
- Module SPF/WIN – Specialization Business Informatics
- Module SPF/WIW – Specialization Economics
You can find the courses for the modules in TISS.
Although you can theoretically complete more than 12 ECTS in the specialization subjects, this only makes sense in individual cases, as you will already reach the total of 180 ECTS with the 12 ECTS.
3. Free Electives and Transferable Skills (up to 18 ECTS)
Free choice: You can choose 12 ECTS completely freely, also from other fields of study or from other universities.
At least 6 ECTS of these must be Transferable Skills from the various soft skill catalogs.
4. Bachelor Thesis (13 ECTS)
The completion of your studies is the bachelor thesis (with 10 ECTS). It is accompanied by the compulsory course SE Scientific Work (3.0 ECTS).
